Hi Buddies, I wish to ask about the rod / line weight. Which weight is easier to present?
I'm using #6 and sometimes I feel it very heavy to present. Maybe my rod's action is too slow.
Do you have any experience before? Thanks!

Hi, mate, The #6 rod and lines you used should be useful for any condition at all ,( Sea, fresh water).

Through action rod 's good for beginner, becasue it being forgiving to the beginner. but you need to learn how to casting techniques first.

Different rod lenghts and actions are used in different  fishing situations.

Short light weight rods ( 7ft-8ft6in) taking light weight lines AFTM 3-5 are used for dry fly and nymph fishing on small to medium river and stillwaters were delicate presentation is required at short range.

Long single hand rods ( 9ft-11ft) taking heavierline weights AFTM 6-9 are used for bank and boat fishing on larger stillwaters where longer casting is sometimes required.

Throught or Slow action rod flex from the tip right through to the butt. Slow action fly rods do not generate high line speeds due to their flexibility, are designed for anglers who need to make short and very accurate and gentle casts. As such, slow action fly rods are ideal for fly-fishing smaller rivers, Streams and other areas that require anglers to make short and accurate casts. Addtionally, slow action fly rods excel in protecting light tippets.

Medium or Middle to Tip action rod are probably the most common action used and are the workhorses of the fly rod world. They are by far the most popular fly rods on the market today. Medium action fly rods are also the most versatile of fly rods. They can make longer casts quite adequately, especially in the hands of a good caster while being forgiving to the beginner.A great all round action suitable for a range of different fishing situation.

Tip or Fast action rod tend to be stiff only flexing in the tip section.  This generates high line speeds, tight loops for extreme distance and greater accuracy .
Due to the high line speed generated by fast action fly rods, casting in windy condition is much easies especially if used in conjunction with advanced casting techniques that help reduce some of the effect of wind resisitance.

Hope it can help you to understand all different's type action rods .

In my opinion, a #5 - #6 rod is by far the best rod for a beginner. It's suitable in various situations ie size of fish big  (bear mind I am not talking about a "giant fish") or small, wind directions etc. Remember clearly in my post about when purchasing a fly rod, in general, it is advisable to buy a higher weight fly-line compare to the weight of the fly-rod: a #7 line with a #6 rod. Some rod makers, though claimed their products are up to AFTM standard, do have variations. A higher weight line always load better and the casting distance much further.

If you find a #6 rod heavy, I would think that your casting action is some what not done correctly. The casting practice should be done without thinking that you should hook a fish once your line/fly is in the water. A good timing as well as patience are both required with the forward and backward cast.

On another note, if you find the ache coming from you shoulder, you are definately not casting the right way.
