What is Egi?
Egi is the Japanese traditional lure for squid fishing, which imitates fish or prawn.
They come in many different styles including cloth pattern, base color and clothcolor, etc.
Let's find the best Egi depending on the situation.
Growth & Season
In early spring, adult squid swarm into shallow waters. During this season, the best squid in size is fished.
In autumn, schools of cuirious squid of about 500g are often observed.
Autum is the most suitable season for squid fishing beginners as squid is easily caught.
Fishing outfits
There are many dangers in saltwater fishing. You must be fully prepared for comfortable fishing.
Here, we introduce the must-have items for saltwater fishing.
Life jacket
It often happens that you accidentally fall into the waters by unexpected high waves or misstep even where it seems safe.
Save your own life by yourself.
Fishing vest
For active fishing, fishing vest is the necessity to put in lures, scissors and accessories.
Many vests have the function as a life jacket.
Fishing boots
Comfortable even when getting wet with waters. Also for protection of feet.
Pliers, scissors, etc.
Carry scissors and pliers for assembly of rigs or removing a lure from fish.
Scale is convenient if available for measuring the caught fish.
Polarization sunglasses
Polarization sunglasses reduce glare on the water surface to see the underwater.
They also serve as an eye protection from accidents.
Landing net
A landing net is useful for fishing at higher spots or in dangerous areas.
Gaff hook for squid is also convenient.
Fishing gloves
Some fish has sting and sharp teeth. And you are exposed to many dangerous conditions on shore.
You must fully protect your hands.
Tackle
Needless to say, you need a rod and a reel for fishing. Here, we will explain with tackle.
Rod
For shore fishing, you need an about 8-9ft spinning reel that allows casting up to 22g.
For boat fishing, a soft bait rod of about 1.8ft is the best.
Reel
For casting from shore, a medium spinning reel and for boat fishing, a small bait reel is fine.
Line
For the main line, sensitive PE line or stretchable nylon line is preferable.
In case of nylon line, tie about 12-14lbs. line directly to the Egi.
In case of PE line, choose #1or so and you need to connect shock leader to the top of the PE line.
For the shock leader, use about 12-14lbs. fluorocarbon line.
How to connect the main line and the shock leader.
>>SF knot
Wrap a PE line around a leader line about 15 times.
Pull the wrapped portion firmly.
Make a uni knot with the leader line. Slide the wrapped portion to the knot.
Hold the leader line to be cut in your mouth. Pull the PE main line and the leader line by winding them around your hands.Tighten the knot and trim the short end.
※Simple, quick and strong.
>>FG knot
Wrap a PE line around a leader line about 15 times.
Pull the wrap firmly.
Slowly tighten the leader and the main line after tying a half-hitch.
When tightened, continue wrapping the PE branch line around both the PE main line and the leader line by half hitch. Wrap about 10 times.
Trim the excess line ends.
*Effective for casting, etc. as the joint is virtually knotless.
>>Double uni knot
Overlap approximately 10-20cm of the ends of two lines to be joined.
With the tag end of line A, form a loop around the line B.
Pass the tag end A into the loop and make 4-5 turns over the two lines. Pull the lines lightly.
Repeat the same process using the line B. Pull the line lightly.
Pull the line A & B in opposite directions to tighten firmly.
Tie the Egi to the line.
>>Uni Knot
Pass a line through the ring of a lure. Form a loop by folding back the line.
Pass the line end through the loop and wrap around the main line 4-5 times.
Pull the line end slowly to tighten lightly. Pull the main line to tighten the knot.
Egi
Use various size of Egi depending on target fish or locations. And try different colors by the water colors and the weather.
Regarding Egi, we will explain on the next page.
Color & Size of Egi
Usage by color.
Besides the back color, Egi specifications include the base color, marble pattern, gold or red tape that give more influence on fishing results.
Based on the marble pattern, use the others by rotation to find the"hit color", which is the point for good results.
When rotated, let's try the other back color.
Points in choosing Egi size.
Use #2-3 Egi if you target about 500g squid (palm-size).
Use #3.5-4.5 Egi for over 500g squid.
How to spot fishing points
One indication to spot a fishing point is squid ink dispersion which suggests squid can be caught there.
The other hints are seaweeds, place near by shallow waters or shore where the current is moderate.
Practical fishing
Cast an Egi to sink in the waters (The sink depth depends on the water depth. ). When the Egi has sunk, lift your rod up & down vigorously in a jigging motion (Syakuri) to move the Egi upward.
Then tighten the line by reeling in as the line becomes slack by the Syakuri. Sink the Egi again and lift it up quickly. Repeat these actions until the Egi comes underfoot. When squid strikes, slowly reel in not to let the line slack and get the squid.
Type of the Shyakuri
Lift up & down the rod once in a big motion. Then the Egi jumps up vigorously to attract squid.
Note that if the line is slack by wind, the Egi moves only a little even by the Syakuri.
3 times Syakuri
One time Syakuri will give the Egi a rectilinear movement only. Do the Syakuri twitchily three times in a row, and the Egi darts from side to side. In this manner, the Egi moves straight and sideways to draw more attention from squid.
Twitch & Dart
Place the rod in the downward position and move it as if slapping, and the Egi repeats the twitch & dart actions from side to side. This technique is effective for the shallow waters that do not allow the Egi to sink or when you target active squid.
Practical boat fishing
A Throw a rig into the water.
B Ahead of the Egi, the slim shaped heavier lead reaches to the target water range. Hold for 5-10 seconds until the Egi follows and sinks.
C Hold for another 10-20 seconds. If squid does not strike, attract by lifting the rod up & down in a jigging motion (Shyakuri).
D When squid strikes, slowly reel in.
