Fishingwith Lures: soft plastic – Part one
SoftPlastics (Sps) have been one of the most exciting developments on theAustralian fishing scene over the past 10 years. Sure, we’ve seen amazingadvances in fishing lines, high-carbon rods and tricky, hi-tech reels, but SPshave swept right across the country, and at a price that makes them availableto all anglers. Better than the value for money is the fact that SPs work sowell. When used appropriately, they are super0effective on virtually everythingthat swims and eats lures.
TheHistory
As faras I’m aware, softies first appeared during the mid ‘60s when somelateral-thinking by innovative US anglers led to the creation of a plasticworm. And the rest as they say, is history. New soft plastic compounds, dyesand scents have become a million dollar business and now anglers have dozensupon dozens of brands to choose from.
Given that SPs have been around fornearly 50 years, it’s incredible that they’ve taken so long to become widelyaccepted in Australia, In the 1970s we learnt that curly-tailed Mr Twisterscould take flathead at will, and I for one spent hours tossing lime green andorange tails around the sandflats and channels of my local waterway. But that’spretty much where it ended, until a handful of switched-on anglers discoveredhow effective two-inch curl-tailed grubs were on bream. In fact, if you lookthrough back issues of Modern Fishing you’ll fund that our very own Stario andBushy were largely responsible for opening ip the book for all of us to read.
Whatexactly is a soft plastic?
A softplastic is a plastic lure that is soft – no, I’m not trying to be funny! They mayor may not look like a real life creature (such as a worm or small fish), butthey do feel like one. When you consider that fish feed on living creaturesthat are generally fairly soft (crabs and shellfish excluded, of course), itmust be a shock when they chomp down on a metal or rock-hard plastic lure.
When afish hits a SP there isn’t this shock factor and they usually won’t spit it outstraight away. SPs must feel ‘right’ because timid feeders like bream, and evenluderick at times, suck them right down after holding them in their lips on theinitial bite. This all puts soft plastic fair and square in the good newsbasket for fishermen
Expertsonly? No ways!
There’smore good news when you consider that SPs are about as far from an ‘expertsonly’ technique as you can get, Plastics are ideal for younger and less experiencedanglers for a number of reasons, but the best one is that they are dead easy touse.
Therelures come in all shapes and sizes: from black to flouro-pink; from 1.5 cm to30 cm or more in length. Worms and grubs dominate the designs but you can buysoft plastic fish, prawns, yabbies and lizards.
There’sa lifetime of learning to be had with SPs, so next month we’ll get you startedby taking a look at the most popular styles and techniques.
