do you think using size 8 or smaller is prefered in HK from your experience? have you used other patterns? i guess crazy charlie and gotcha should be a must
Have always been a fan of floating/sink-tip lines because of their ease in handling.... The particular line I was using is the SA Nymph taper WF line which has a massive 60ft+ belly for turning over weighted nymphs. I bought it while I was back in Singapore a couple'a wks back because I intended to throw weighted flies with long leaders. The leader I was using is made up of an SA Bonefish tapered intermediate leader (about 7ft) and then a straight 8 or 10 Ib flurocarbon of about 6ft.
Jacky: I'm not too sure about fly size at the moment, cos I'm so desperate to catch something that I'm chucking the small flies first. It's just a rule of thumb to downsize for finicky fish. Another reason why I used size 8 was becos my mate in Sydney used the same fly for the breams in Sydney to great effect. He mentioned that although the flies tied on sz 6 and 8 are abt the same sz, but the fish preferred the 8... I also found that the size of the bead chain eyes seem to make a difference as well... just need to find the HK breams to test out the theory...
on weight forward lines, you'll find that casting the belly (i.e. the thicker part) is alot easier cos more energy is transmitted because of the larger cross-section of the line... so a longer belly allows more energy to be transferred to turn over weighted flies.... that's what I think anyway
