Which charter operator are you going with?  I went to Rompin last year and fished with Fishzonesportfishing.  I'm still in touch weekly with Dominic who runs that operation.  Seems like fishing has been pretty tough last few weeks (for Rompin standard anyway).  The best time to go is late September to early November when the huge Sardine schools are close inshore.  It's an incredible place when in season (i've seen more Sails there than anywhere in the world) -- I've booked two boats for a return trip this year in the second half of October -- fly only.

Cheers

Hi Kman, thanks for your reply. I don't know who's gonna be hired. My friend went there around 4 weeks
ago and 2 sailfishs were caught. He heard from the boatman that season starts from July. We planned to
fish two days end of July there. It would be great if you give me more info of that area. Thanks in advance! Paul

Not sure if you're booked in yet.  If not, I'd highly recommend Dominic at xxxxxxxx. His website is xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx  -- all of the charter boats in Rompin are pretty basic and cater to livebaiting, but Dominic is probably the only guy in town with the knowhow and equipment to help you get a Sail on fly if that's what you're after.  From what I understand, there are Sails in Rompin virtually year round, but the schools don't get thick until September to November. If you're after one on fly, you should be there then to maximize the no. of shots you get (you need a lot of shots to land one).  I did two days with Dominic last November.  We raised over 80 fish in two days, hooked 11 and landed 6.  Here's a pic of one.

Hi kman2, thanks again for your material. I may joint you again in Oct.
I have several questions in my head. Would you please give me the answer?

1. weight of leader, i.e. 20 pounds carbon line?
2. length of leader, i.e. 9' or longer?
3. which kind of flies, i.e. tube, popper, color, hook size etc.
4. Fly line, F, S, or I is suitable?
5. wt 12 rod is ok? With 12wt or 13wt?
6. spare fly line needed?

Sorry for asking so many questions coz I'm green and wish to learn more.
Thanks in advance. Tight lines, Paul

Thanks Jacky.

Paul --

1. Unless you're fishing regulation IGFA, I would recommend fishing straight 60lbs or 80lbs from the end of the flyline to the fly.  Sailfish have a very rough bill so you will need a shock tippet of 60lbs or 80lbs anyway.

2. You should keep the leader short around 6ft. Anything over that would be hard to cast.

3. I used Cam Sigler style flies.  You can check them out at his website.  Just google it.  The flies are around 6-7 inches long.  Best to use 6/0 tandem hooks offset at 180 or 90 degrees.  This is really important as it helps with hookup.

4. I used a full fast sink line.  They are easy to cast and the fly tracks much better when you strip them.

5. I used a 12 weight, but you can probably land them on a strong 10 weight.  A 11 or 12 weight would shorten the fight and help bring the fish in during the later stages of the fight.

6. Always good to bring a spare fly line.  You never know what can happen.
